The Lacuna

December 4, 2009

Kingsolver, Barbara. The Lacuna. I admire writers who push themselves to try new things, to use different styles or delve into completely new content, and Barbara Kingsolver is definitely one of these writers. In her new novel, she basically writes a history of the U.S. (and some history of Mexico) from 1929 to 1951, showing all kinds of fascinating bits about people from Trotsky to McCarthy. Most courageously of all, at least from a fiction-writing point of view, she includes Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as characters! This is a highly original novel.
